Working aircraft hangars almost never sit on bare concrete. They run resinous coating systems, because raw slab loses to fuel, hydraulic fluid, and steel wheels every single time.

That is worth thinking about this week. The 2026 Rochester International Airshow took over Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport on August 8 and 9, with the Air Force Thunderbirds headlining and a Marine Corps F-35B in the lineup.

Tens of thousands of people walked past hangar doors that weekend. Very few looked down.

A Hangar Floor and a Garage Floor Fail the Same Way

The scale is different. The failure mechanisms are identical.

Concrete is porous. Anything liquid that lands on it soaks in, and anything that soaks in either stains permanently or freezes and pushes the surface apart from the inside.

The last row is the one homeowners underestimate. A glossy floor that turns into an ice rink in March is a downgrade, not an upgrade.

Why Aviation Facilities Reach for Polyaspartic

Epoxy is the workhorse base layer. It bonds hard to prepared concrete and builds real thickness.

Polyaspartic goes on top, and it is there for reasons that matter in an aviation setting. It holds up under ultraviolet exposure near open bay doors, it resists fuel and solvents better than a bare epoxy surface, and it cures fast enough that a facility can shut down for a weekend instead of a week.

That same logic is why a polyaspartic topcoat makes sense on a residential slab in Greece or Pittsford. You get one weekend of disruption instead of five days of an unusable garage.

Cure Speed Is a Rochester Advantage

Our installation window is genuinely narrow. Between late fall damp and a slab that will not hold temperature in January, there are only so many good weeks in Monroe County.

Polyaspartic chemistry tolerates lower ambient temperatures than standard epoxy and reaches walk on hardness in hours. That widens the calendar on both ends of the season.

The Part Nobody Photographs

Nothing on a hangar floor gets rolled onto an unprepared surface. The slab is diamond ground to open the pores, tested for moisture vapor, and repaired before a single drop of resin is mixed.

Skip that and the coating is a sticker. It will look correct for a season and then peel in sheets where the bond never formed.

On older Rochester homes this matters more than the product choice. Slabs poured in the 1950s and 1960s around Brighton and Irondequoit often have spalling at the apron, hairline cracking from decades of freeze and thaw, and no vapor barrier underneath.

Those need structural repair and resurfacing first. Coating over a crumbling edge just gives you a coated crumbling edge.

Translating the Spec to a Home Garage

You do not need an aviation grade buildout to park a truck. You do need the same layer logic.

  • Mechanical prep. Diamond grinding or shot blasting, never acid etching alone.
  • Moisture testing. A calcium chloride or relative humidity test before anything is applied.
  • Epoxy base coat. The bonding and build layer, matched to the slab condition.
  • Broadcast layer. Vinyl chips add slip resistance and hide the imperfections every twenty year old slab has.
  • Polyaspartic topcoat. Ultraviolet stability, chemical resistance, and abrasion protection.

Most of our residential work in Webster and Henrietta lands on a full garage coating system built exactly that way. The chip broadcast layer does double duty, because texture is what keeps the floor safe when a salted vehicle drips all over it.

Commercial clients want the same build for different reasons. A shop or storage building running forklifts gets an industrial grade system with a heavier base and a thicker wear layer.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Sign

Ask how the slab will be prepped, and reject any answer that stops at cleaning and etching. Ask whether the moisture test is included or extra.

Ask what the topcoat is by name and whether it carries ultraviolet stability, because a garage with a south facing door will yellow an unprotected epoxy surface within a couple of summers. Ask for the return to service timeline in hours, not days.
